And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[b] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20
What is the primary task of the Church?
According to the Lord Jesus Christ, the chief mission of the Church is to "make disciples", (Matt. 28:19). This was the supreme task that our Savior set forth when he issued the Great Commission.
But what is a disciple?
Making disciples means much more than getting people to say yes to a watered down message about Jesus. Discipleship certainly must include the ongoing and critical work of faithful evangelism among the lost, but it always has its sights set on spiritual maturity and growth, not merely conversion.
The basic definition of a disciple is a learner or student who is submitted to a teacher so that they might learn from him and become more like him. Throughout history this word has been used in many contexts. In the case of Christianity, however, the goal we have been given is to help all kinds of people from every walk of life repent of their sins and become humble learners at the feet of Jesus Christ as both their Savior and Lord. The aim of our learning is to grow day by day to be more like our Master, Jesus Christ, in all the attitudes, beliefs, and actions of our lives.
So what exactly are we supposed to learn as disciples?
Jesus answered this question too, and he did so in the exact same portion of Scripture. Jesus said that the content which we are to spend our whole lives learning to know, love, and obey is "all that I have commanded you," (Matt. 28:20). Since Jesus is God, and the Bible is God's Word, this means that Christians are called to spend their whole lives growing in a proper knowledge of the Bible as they learn to live more and more obediently to all God's holy will.
So how exactly do we go about discipling our flock here at Covenant Grace?
There are several ways that we endeavor to "make disciples" here at Covenant Grace. The single greatest opportunity for discipleship takes place every Sunday morning during Lord's Day worship. This is the premier time of teaching in the life of our local church. However, in addition to this, we offer several other ministries which are designed to help you and your children flourish in Christ.
