"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
I Peter 2:9
"Christ for us, Christ in us, Christ through us."
For us, the words above are not just a catchy Christian phrase. They represent the theology that guides our lives as God's beloved children. The gospel that first saves us by God's grace, also sanctifies us by God's power, and ultimately sends us on God's mission to every neighbor and nation of this world.
Jesus once quipped: "No one lights a lamp in order to put it under a basket," (Matt. 5:15). His point is clear. The purpose of lighting a lamp is for its light to shine brightly all around—not to be hidden away. The same is true of our salvation. Psalm 67:1-2 teaches us that the purpose of God in our redemption is so "that [his] way may be known on earth, [his] saving power among all nations." Like lamps set ablaze by God's grace, the words, actions, and priorities of our lives are to stand out so distinctly in this world that Christ is vividly proclaimed everywhere we are and everywhere we go, (Matt. 5:16).
This wonderful mission begins in the living room of our own homes. It takes its baby steps when the gospel starts to redefine the way we order our own life (Eph. 4:1), the way we love our spouse (Eph. 5:32-33) and the way we raise our children (Eph. 6:4). But it does not stop there. As grace renovates our own hearts and homes, it then continues to extend across the street, across the lunch table, over to the other side of town, and even to the furthest corners of this world, (Rev. 5:9-10). We are all called to be "ambassadors for Christ," (II Cor. 5:20).
